The Sacred Heart Minor Seminary
The Sacred Heart Minor Seminary was started by the Bishop Most Rev.A.Chapuis MEP for those who aspired to become Priests. The building was blessed on 25th of November 1926, but its life began to function from 7th January, 1929 with seven students and Fr.A.Xavier as Rector.
It was during the Post-Vatican era, that the life of the Seminarians were to be fitted to the renewal in the running of the Seminary. Part-time lay professors were added to the staff. Students were sent up to the College for higher studies. With the help from Opus Sancti Petri, we have a beautiful terraced building surmounted by a large statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Only candidates who have completed S.S.L.C. are admitted for the formation of Priesthood. Falling with the requirements of the Major Seminaries, the syllabus of the Initiation course of Spiritual Formation includes such subjects as Spiritual Life, Introduction to the Sacred Scriptures, Salvation History, Liturgy and Indian Church History. We are paying attention to the study of English language. Carnatic music is also taught. The Seminary is equipped with a good library.
Now we have in the Minor Seminary 20 students, 28 students doing their College studies and 57 Seminarians are studying in various major Seminaries such as St.Peter's, Bangalore; St. Paul's, Trichy; Sacred Heart, Chennai; and Good Shepherd, Coimbatore. By God's grace, we have good vocation for our Diocese (105 seminarians) and we are getting an average of five new Priests every year.
