St.Joesph's Carmel Asram-Kumbakonam
Our former Bishop, Msgr.Peter Francis, keenly felt the absolute need for a Carmel monastery to aid the Dicoese by prayer and penance. A branch of the Carmel Convent, Pondicherry (Discalced Nuns) was started in the town extension, Kumbakonam in 1936.
As years went by, it was found that the building housing the Sisters was not best suited for the Nuns to lead a proper religious life according to the rules and regulations laid down in their Constitution. Hence a new site was purchased and an ashram conducive to their life was erected by Most Rev.Dr.D.Paul Arulswamy, the previous Bishop. This new Carmel Ashram, far removed from the bustle and noise of the town, is best suited to the contemplative life of the Sisters. Here they lead a life of contemplative prayer, self imposed penance and sweet solitude. It is therefore a power house of spiritual energy which helps the Diocese in multifarious ways.
May Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Protector of this Order, Holy Mother St.Theresa of Avila, the Reformer of the Order and St.Theresa of Child Jesus, the wonderful teacher of the "LITTLE WAY", help the Sisters to bear witness to Christ by their life of prayer, penance and seclusion.
